Can CLEP help if my AP score was not enough for college credit?

Yes. If your AP score did not result in college credit, CLEP may provide another opportunity to demonstrate what you know. Modern States offers free, self-paced online courses that can help you prepare for CLEP exams.

How CLEP can provide another path

AP and CLEP are separate programs. Both are administered by College Board, but they use different exams and scoring systems.
You can take CLEP after AP. Taking an AP course or exam does not prevent you from preparing for and taking a CLEP exam.
Your prior learning may help. If you studied a related AP subject, some of that knowledge may support your CLEP preparation, although exam topics and formats are not identical.
Modern States preparation is free. Courses include instruction, readings, practice questions, and a course final aligned with the corresponding CLEP exam.

A lower-than-hoped-for AP score does not erase the work you already completed. CLEP may give you another way to prepare, demonstrate your knowledge, and potentially earn college credit.

Before choosing a CLEP exam

Check whether your college accepts the CLEP exam you are considering.
Confirm the minimum score required and how the credit would apply to your degree.
Compare the CLEP exam content with the AP subject you studied.
Enroll in the corresponding Modern States course and prepare at your own pace.

Eligible learners who complete a Modern States course and earn 75% or higher on the course final can request a Modern States CLEP Scholarship.

Important note

AP and CLEP credit policies vary by institution. Before registering for a CLEP exam, confirm with your college or university which exams it accepts, the minimum score required, and how the credit will apply. Modern States does not guarantee that a college will award credit.
