Can CLEP help me return to college or finish faster?

Modified on Fri, Oct 16 at 1:00 PM

Yes. If college was interrupted, you are returning after time away, or you need a few more credits to finish, CLEP may offer a flexible way to make progress. Modern States provides free, self-paced online courses that help you prepare for CLEP exams.

How CLEP may help you get back on track

  • Build on what you already know. CLEP exams let you demonstrate knowledge in introductory college subjects.
  • Study around work and family. Modern States courses are online and self-paced, with no fixed class schedule.
  • Prepare at no cost. Modern States courses include instruction, readings, practice questions, and a course final aligned with the corresponding CLEP exam.
  • Potentially reduce the courses you still need. A qualifying CLEP score may earn college credit and help you move closer to completing a degree.

Every college sets its own CLEP policy. Before choosing an exam, confirm that your college accepts it and that the credit will apply to your remaining degree requirements.

How Modern States works

  • Choose a CLEP exam that your college accepts for a requirement you still need.
  • Enroll in the corresponding free Modern States course.
  • Study at your own pace and complete the coursework and final exam.
  • Eligible learners who complete the course and earn 75% or higher on the course final can request a Modern States CLEP Scholarship.
  • Register for the CLEP exam through College Board and earn the score required by your college.

Important note

CLEP credit policies vary by institution. Before registering for an exam, ask your college or university which CLEP exams it accepts, the minimum score required, how many credits may be awarded, and how those credits will apply to your program. Modern States does not guarantee that a college will award credit.
