What’s the Difference Between Spanish Language vs. Spanish with Writing?

Modified on Mon, Jun 16 at 1:41 PM

The CLEP Spanish Language exam is designed to assess your ability to understand written and spoken Spanish, covering skills typically taught during the first two years of college-level language study. The exam includes only multiple-choice questions focused on listening and reading comprehension, and your score is available immediately after testing.

The CLEP Spanish with Writing exam includes the same multiple-choice section as the Spanish Language exam, but also features two writing tasks that assess your ability to compose responses in Spanish. These writing tasks are scored by the College Board, and scores are typically available within 2–3 weeks.

Modern States currently offers a free, self-paced course to help you prepare for the Spanish Language exam. It is designed to give you the skills and confidence needed to succeed on the exam and earn college credit—at no cost.

Before choosing your exam, be sure to check with your college or university to find out which version they accept and how credit is awarded.
