What’s the Difference Between College Composition and College Composition Modular?

Modified on Mon, Jun 16 at 12:00 PM

The CLEP College Composition exam includes multiple-choice questions and two essay assignments that test your skills in analysis, argumentation, and synthesis. Essays are evaluated by both human scorers and computer-assisted scoring, and your official exam score is typically available within 2–3 weeks.

The College Composition Modular exam, on the other hand, includes only multiple-choice questions. Some test centers may offer optional essays that are scored locally by your institution—not by the College Board. Because of this, score availability and credit policies for the Modular exam vary by college.

Modern States offers a free, self-paced course specifically designed to prepare you for the College Composition CLEP exam.

The course includes dedicated modules on essay structure, outlining, and revision strategies to help you succeed on the required written essays. While students are not required to submit essays as part of the course, the instruction includes examples and planning guidance to support essay development.

This course is ideal for students preparing for the full CLEP writing experience, which includes two essays scored by college faculty.

Before selecting an exam, we encourage you to check with your college or university to confirm which version they accept.
