Welcome to the Modern States Class Progress guide! This page explains how to track your progress in Brightspace and what matters most for earning your free CLEP voucher.
How Voucher Eligibility Works
To receive a CLEP voucher through Modern States, you must:
Attempt all Check for Understanding quizzes in the course.
Earn an average quiz score of 75% or higher.
Unlock and attempt the Final Exam.
Score at least 75% on the Final Exam.
Once you meet these requirements, the Voucher Request will become available in your course.
What You See in Class Progress
Grades (Most Important)
Shows your scores for quizzes and the final exam.
The Grades page is the official source for your average.
If your quiz average and final exam score are 75% or higher, you qualify for a voucher.
Content Progress
Tracks how many course pages you’ve clicked.
Includes: Getting Started, course materials, quizzes, final exam, voucher request, and next steps.
This does not affect voucher eligibility. A low percentage here only means you didn’t open every page.
Quizzes
- Lists the quizzes and exams you’ve attempted.
- The “average” shown here is not your real score. Brightspace calculates it by treating all quizzes as equal, even though they have different numbers of questions.
- Example: In American Literature there are five Check for Understanding quizzes (15 questions each) and a Final Exam (90 questions). You must complete all five quizzes with at least a 75% average to unlock the Final Exam. Then you must score at least 75% on the Final Exam to earn your voucher.
- The progress summary will always show the Final Exam, but the average here is misleading. Always check Grades for your true score.
Course Access
Tracks how many days you’ve entered the course.
Helpful for monitoring your own study habits.
Not tied to grades or voucher eligibility.
System Access History
Tracks how often you’ve logged into the Modern States platform overall.
“Absent period” means days since your last login.
Not related to vouchers or course completion.
Where to See Your Quiz Average
The Grades page is the only place that shows your true quiz average.
Why?
- The Quizzes tab just adds up your scores and divides them equally. It does not account for the fact that the Final Exam has many more questions than a Check for Understanding quiz.
- Example: In American Literature there are 5 Check for Understanding quizzes (15 questions each) and a Final Exam (90 questions). The Quizzes tab will list all of them, but the “average” there is misleading.
- The Grades page correctly weights everything and shows the actual average we use for voucher eligibility.
If you want to know whether you qualify for a voucher, check your Grades.
What to Focus On
Grades: This is what determines voucher eligibility.
Quizzes: Use this to confirm attempts, but check Grades for your true average.
Content Progress: Optional; not required for vouchers.
Course Access and System Access: Just activity logs; they don’t affect your grade or eligibility.
