Yes — active-duty, National Guard, and Reserve service members; veterans; military spouses and partners; ROTC and JROTC cadets; and children of service members or veterans can use Modern States' free online courses to prepare for CLEP exams. CLEP can provide a flexible path to college credit that fits around deployments, PCS moves, work, school, and family responsibilities.
Why CLEP fits military life
- Study anywhere, anytime. Modern States courses are online and self-paced — no fixed class times, no semester calendar.
- Prepare before taking the exam. Modern States courses include instruction, readings, practice questions, and a course final aligned with the corresponding CLEP exam.
- Make progress toward a degree. A passing CLEP score may help learners earn college credit and reduce the number of courses needed for a degree.
- Free preparation. Every Modern States course is free.
Because each college determines its own CLEP policy, confirm that your institution accepts the exam and understand how the credit will apply to your degree before scheduling it.
About military education benefits
Eligible active-duty, National Guard, and Reserve service members may have CLEP exam funding available through the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support, or DANTES.
Eligible military spouses may have education benefits available through the My Career Advancement Account Scholarship, or MyCAA.
Modern States does not administer DANTES or MyCAA and does not determine eligibility. Contact your installation education office, benefits office, or College Board's CLEP program to confirm what applies to you.
The Modern States CLEP Scholarship
Eligible learners who complete a Modern States course and earn 75% or higher on the course final can request a Modern States CLEP Scholarship. Approved learners receive a voucher code to enter when registering for the corresponding CLEP exam through College Board.
If another program, such as DANTES, covers your exam, confirm which funding source to use before requesting support.
What to do next
Important note
CLEP credit policies vary by institution. Before scheduling an exam, confirm with your college or university which CLEP exams they accept and how the credit applies. For exam funding and benefit eligibility, confirm details with your military education office, benefits office, or College Board / CLEP.
