The message below was sent to all Modern States learners who receive email communication from us. It provides an overview of our Learning Management System transition and implications for learners. We will send updated messages as we move towards the transition.

Dear [Learner],
Since our launch in 2017, more than half a million of you have registered and taken Modern States’ online courses as part of your learning journey. Thank you for making Modern States an essential tool for making college affordable and accessible for everyone!
As the 2024-25 school year begins across the country, I am excited to share an update about an important transition taking place at Modern States over the coming months. Our program’s sustained growth requires us to move to a new online platform that can better support our community.
What will not change: Modern States courses will remain free, we will continue to offer CLEP vouchers, and we will remain focused on making college accessible and affordable to all learners.
What this means
For quick reference, the learning platform we have used since our launch is located at courses.modernstates.org. Our new platform will be available at learn.modernstates.org.
The new platform is already open for use by a growing number of individual learners - that is, those who are engaging with Modern States on their own and not as part of a group learning experience, like a school class. If you would like to create an account on our new platform now, click here.
Over the course of the fall, all learners will transition to the new platform, including those engaging with Modern States as part of a group learning experience and those who have an account on our current platform. This will include creating a new account for our new platform.
Individual learners actively taking a course or planning to start one in the next several months should consider whether to take it on our current platform or our new platform. Progress on one will not carry over to the other, but you can have an active account on both platforms. If you anticipate that it will take you several months to complete a course, you likely will want to begin it on our new platform to ensure you have time to complete your courses.
What’s next
As this change moves forward, we will provide updates with more specific guidance about the transition date and how it may affect our learners. We will provide at least 60 days’ notice before we fully transition away from courses.modernstates.org to allow learners to complete active courses.
We have been supported in this effort by dozens of Modern States learners who have tested and provided feedback about our new platform, and whose work has been integral to making this move a success. We appreciate your support and feedback!
We’re excited to launch this new platform, and even more excited to make steady improvements to it as we move forward. As you start using the new platform, whenever that is, we would love to hear from you!
Best,
Jefferson Pestronk, Executive Director
Modern States Education Alliance
