Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): A Guide for Educators

Modified on Fri, Apr 10 at 2:02 PM

What is Two-Factor Authentication?

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) is like having two locks on your door instead of one. When you log into your Modern States Auditor account, you'll need two different types of proof that you are who you say you are. This makes it much harder for someone to break into your account—even if they know your password.

Why 2FA is Required for Modern States Auditors

As a Modern States Auditor, you have access to sensitive information, including:

  • Student progress data
  • Student enrollment information
  • Performance tracking metrics
  • Course access history
  • System access records

Your role in supporting students pursuing free college credit requires maintaining the highest security standards. That’s why 2FA is a mandatory requirement for all Auditor accounts.

Setting Up 2FA for Your Modern States Account

Initial Setup Process

Before you begin: You'll need an authenticator app

As an auditor, two factor authentication is required for your account. You'll need an authenticator app installed before completing the steps below.

We recommend one of the following:

  • Google Authenticator — A simple, widely used app available for iOS and Android.
  • Microsoft Authenticator — A full-featured option from Microsoft, available for iOS and Android.
  • Authy — A multi-device option available for iOS and Android.
  1. Log into learn.modernstates.org with your Auditor credentials.
  2. Click your name in the top right corner of the screen and select Account Settings from the dropdown menu.
  3. Under General Settings, find the Two Factor Authenticator App row and click Enable Two Factor Authentication.
  4. A window will appear with a QR code and a personal code. Open your authenticator app and scan the QR code — or enter the personal code manually if you cannot scan.
  5. Once your app begins generating codes, enter a code in the code box and click Check code. This activates two factor authentication on your account.
