How to Register for Your CLEP Exam

Use the steps below to complete your CLEP exam registration on the College Board website. Have your Modern States voucher code ready before you begin.

Important: Depending on your course, the request may be called a CLEP Scholarship request or a voucher request. Please wait until that request is approved and you receive your Modern States voucher code before registering for your CLEP exam. If you purchase a CLEP exam before receiving and using your Modern States voucher code, that exam fee is not eligible for reimbursement.

Go to clep.collegeboard.org and sign in or create an account.
Select CLEP from the top left dropdown menu.
Select Register for an Exam.
Select your exam topic.
Select Register.
Select Start a new CLEP registration.
Complete your personal information and select Get Started.
Agree to the Terms and Conditions.
When asked “Are you using a voucher to register for this exam?” select Yes.
Enter your Modern States voucher code.
Select the CLEP exam for which your voucher code was issued.
Select a testing location or remote proctoring option.
Continue to complete your registration. Your order total should show $0.00 at checkout when your voucher code has been applied correctly.

Next Step: Schedule Your Test Center Appointment

Use the CLEP test center search to find a location near you. Once you identify a test center, contact the test center directly to schedule your exam date and time.

Some test centers charge a separate test center fee. This fee is paid directly to the test center, not to Modern States or College Board. If you are eligible, you may request reimbursement for the official CLEP test center fee after you take your exam.

Modern States cannot change your College Board registration or testing location for you. If you need help with your CLEP registration, please contact College Board or your selected test center directly.

Remote Proctoring Option

You may use your Modern States voucher code to test with remote proctoring. Be aware that many learners have reported issues with this option due to strict technical requirements, including identity verification, a room scan, a second smartphone as a camera, and software installation steps that must be completed before exam day.

Reminder: Your Modern States voucher code is one-time use only. Once you use it to register for a CLEP exam, the voucher code is considered used. After registration, any exam scheduling, rescheduling, test center, or exam ticket questions should be handled through College Board or your selected test center.
