A Modern States CLEP Scholarship is the benefit Modern States provides to help cover the cost of a CLEP exam after you complete your course requirements and pass the Modern States final exam.
In some Modern States courses, emails, or older help articles, this benefit may also be called a voucher. These terms refer to the same benefit: Modern States provides a voucher code that you can use when registering for your CLEP exam on the College Board website.
Good to know: The scholarship is the benefit from Modern States. The voucher code is the code you use to redeem that benefit when you register for your CLEP exam.
Who can request a Modern States CLEP Scholarship?
Anyone 13 years or older can create a free Modern States account, enroll in a free course, and work toward a CLEP Scholarship.
To request a Modern States CLEP Scholarship, you must:
- Complete the course requirements
- Earn 75% or higher on the Modern States final exam
- Submit your scholarship request from inside your course
There is no separate application and no additional barrier beyond completing the course requirements, passing the Modern States final exam, and submitting your request from inside the course.
How do I request my scholarship?
After you meet the course requirements and earn 75% or higher on the final exam, a request module will become available in your course. Depending on the course version, the module may refer to a CLEP Scholarship, voucher, or voucher request.
To submit your request:
- Attempt all required Check for Understanding quizzes
- Earn 75% or higher on the Final Exam
- Open the scholarship or voucher request module when it appears in your course
- Select the button for the CLEP exam you plan to take
- Follow any on-screen instructions to finish submitting your request
Important: Passing the final exam does not automatically submit your scholarship request. Your request is not submitted until you open the request module and select the exam button for the CLEP exam you plan to take.
What if my course looks different?
Modern States courses may not all look exactly the same. Some courses are part of our newer or beta course experience, while others use the 2025 course format. The scholarship benefit is still available after you complete the course requirements and pass the final exam, but the wording or location of the request module may vary slightly by course.
If you have passed the final exam and do not see a scholarship or voucher request option in your course, please submit a support ticket so our team can help.
What happens if my request is approved?
If your request is approved, you will receive a voucher code by email. You will use that code when registering for your CLEP exam through the College Board website.
Your voucher code is one-time use only. Once you use it to register for a CLEP exam, the voucher code is considered used. After registration, any exam scheduling, rescheduling, or ticket expiration rules are handled through the College Board.
I submitted my request. What should I do next?
Watch your email for an update from Modern States. If your request is approved, your voucher code will be sent to you by email.
