Learners must take CLEP exams in approved testing centers. Schools, colleges, and other institutions can set up their own testing center with the support of College Board and Modern States.
Steps to Become a CLEP Test Center
No cost to schools
Four key steps:
1. Application
- Complete the application form (live as of June 3, 2024): Start or Maintain Your CLEP Program Request form.
- Must designate a Primary Test Center Administrator (PTCA)—the staff person responsible for the process.
2. Agreement
- Sign the ETS CLEP iBT.
- Required for the digital platform.
- Must be executed by the institution.
3. Training
- Online, self-paced ETS eLearning modules (~5–15 hours).
- Certification required for each person administering tests.
- Each receives individual credentials for test tracking and compliance.
4. Technical Setup
- Test center setup with school IT support and optional ETS assistance.
- “Round trip” practice test run required to ensure system readiness.
Estimated Timeline: 3 weeks to 3 months, depending on internal capacity and responsiveness.
